Consider how often the work changes
A one-line voiceover and a course you revise every week need different workflows. For the course, voice reuse, local corrections and chapter organization matter alongside the quality of one sample.
Map your last production: prepare text, choose a voice, generate, listen, revise and export. Check which steps a tool makes easier and which still need manual work. A single impressive clip does not show the cost of repeated production.
Follow the script and recording
Local TTS processes input with a model prepared on your Mac. A hosted speech service generally sends the relevant text or reference material to its servers. Check its current handling and retention terms for the particular service.
Sonano’s local audio inference runs on the device. Model downloads and licensing use online services, while optional external Text AI receives the content you ask it to process. A cloud Agent that writes a script before calling local TTS may still send text to its provider. Review the complete route for confidential material.
Compare setup and runtime needs
| Consider | Local | Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | A suitable model, device and storage | Account, network and service access |
| Runtime | Uses local memory and compute | Depends on connectivity and service availability |
| Repeated takes | Local processing time and software usage rules | Current plan, usage and concurrency rules |
| Delivery | Check file, voice and project management | Check export, project retention and service limits |
Try a short passage on your usual Mac and see whether you can still edit video or prepare text alongside it. Local operation does not guarantee fast results for every model or unlimited device resources.
Count revisions and review time
After the first successful take, make a real change: replace a sentence, correct a name or adjust one character’s delivery. Record how much needs regenerating, the listening time and any additional usage.
Compare current pricing and actual allowances rather than dividing one service’s character count by another’s audio minutes. Sonano Free has daily allowances; see its plan details for Pro and channel terms. Software licensing does not grant rights to someone else’s recording, voice or manuscript.
Finish a small project before deciding
Prepare narration, a short two-person exchange and one local revision. Use the same text through generation and export. Compare pronunciation, voice continuity, editing steps and where the material goes.
For long text, try the chapter-based audiobook workflow. For automation, explore local Agent voice tools. Test the task you expect to repeat.
